For the first time in our 48 year history, the elders are proposing that we adopt a new articulation of our beliefs at Bethany. When our church began in September 1969, the original church constitution and articles of faith were borrowed from the sending church (Bethany Baptist Church, Pleasant Hill, CA) of our founding pastor, Don Zygutis. While our church constitution has had many additions and changes over the years, our doctrinal statement has never been amended. It is likely that our current articles of faith are actually an old GARBC doctrinal statement from the 1950’s.
For some time we have known that our articles of faith needed to be updated, however the task was daunting. Over the past year the Shepherds Council has been working on this project, and since January has met almost weekly working through a fresher and clearer expression of our historic faith. The proposal does not change what we believe, but it does make what we believe easier to read and understand. One new facet of how we express our beliefs is the addition of a brief list of Core Beliefs for our church that we will expect everyone at Bethany to personally affirm as part of becoming a member of our church:
There is only one true God who is Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.
God is sovereign as creator and sustainer of all things.
The 66 books of the Bible are inspired by God and authoritative.
All people are sinners in need of salvation.
Jesus lived a perfect life, died, and rose again to save us from our sins.
Through faith in Jesus our sins are forgiven, we receive salvation, and we are made right with God.
The church is established by God and vital to Christian living.
Jesus is coming back again to rule and reign.
The members of Bethany Baptist Church are invited to read through this proposal, and come to our Town Hall meeting on Sunday night, May 21st at 6pm. This proposal will be voted on by the membership at our annual business meeting on Sunday night, June 4, 2017. Click on the link below to read the complete document:
